Rajya Sabha adjourns till 11 a.m. on Friday after the farewell to retiring members. Chairman M. Venkaiah Naidu says Special Mentions for today will taken up on the next working day (Friday).

3.50 p.m.

Venkaiah Naidu thanks SAD’s Naresh Gujral

Rajya Sabha Chairman M. Venkaiah Naidu thanks SAD member Naresh Gujral. Mr. Naidu says, “Naresh Gujral always used to keep in touch with friends from all sides and he also used to coordinate when there was no recognised opposition he formed a group and made a good contribution to the proper functioning of this house.”

Members make their parting speech

Several members make their parting speech in the House. Jaiprakash Nishad, Mahesh Poddar, Ramkumar Verma and Sampatiya Uikey of the BJP, Chhaya Verma of the Congress and Dr. Sasmit Patra of the BJD spoke during the session.

Swapan Dasgupta says time to think if law-making central to parliamentary agenda

BJP’s Swapan Dasgupta says, “Today we have come to a situation where law-making is less important than delivery, performance and facilitation. And therefore, in my view, I think there is a case for actually looking at whether law-making should become the central focus of the parliamentary agenda or move to something else.”

House resumes, members pay farewell to retiring members

House resumes and members continue to pay their farewell to retiring MPs. During the session, former PM H.D. Devegowda conveys his regard to the contributions of the members. He mentions Jairam Ramesh, Congress MP from Karnataka.

Proceedings will resume at 2.00 p.m.

“I’m proud that not a single word I’ve said in this House has been expunged,” says Anand Sharma.

“I’m also equally proud that in all these days I’ve been in the House, I was never in the Well,” the MP adds.

“I will be failing in discharging my responsibility if I don’t say that Congress party is also responsible for sending me to this House,” says V. Vijayasai Reddy.

“Had Congress party not foisted the cases, I would not have come to this House. Jairam Ramesh ji has a special place in my heart, he has always guided me,” says the MP.

Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh thanks retiring members of the Rajya Sabha for their service.

Mr. Singh expresses his gratitude towards retiring co-deputy chairmen Surendra Singh Nagar and Sasmit Patra. “They have contributed immensely towards the smooth functioning of the House.”

The Constitution (Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes) Orders (Amendment) Bill, 2022 was taken up discussion. The House passed the Bill.
