Rajasthan: Satish Poonia’s ‘black bride’ remark invites Opposition ire

JAIPUR: BJP state president Satish Poonia’s statement comparing the state budget to a black bride has invited sharp criticism in political circles.

Congress was quick to take a swipe at Poonia. Congress official twitter handle @RajasthanPCC tweeted, “Satish Poonia ji has not only insulted women but also hurt the dignity of women by making intemperate and irresponsible remarks. Derogatory words for women, abusive language for sisters and daughters and making double-class statements have become the hallmark of BJP leaders.”

Calling the remarks racist, Lokesh Sharma, officer on special duty (OSD) to CM Gehlot, tweeted, “The respect of women is paramount. For criticizing the budget @DrSatishPoonia ji made a racist remark ‘It looks like a black-skinned bride has been taken to a beauty parlour and presented with good makeup’ is not appropriate. It is the responsibility of all of us to respect women.”

Strongly condemning Poonia’s statement, the state women commission’s chairperson, Rehana Rayaz Chisti said, “Speaking about the budget is one thing but talking about women in this manner is shameful. Satish Poonia holds an official post and this statement can encourage even his followers to do the same. We want that strict action should be taken against him.” The commission is likely to write to the speaker of the assembly, C P Joshi as well regarding the matter.
