Rain spells block 150 roads in Uttarakhand in 24 hours

DEHRADUN: More than 150 roads in the state have been blocked, mainly due to landslides, owing to incessant showers in the past 24 hours, as per the information provided by the state emergency operation centre on Thursday. In Chamoli district, 31 roads, mostly village link roads, are still blocked, while 27 roads are obstructed in Pauri Garhwal district. In Pithoragarh district, 21 roads, including a border road, are out of bounds.

The state government has deployed over 300 JCBs and pokland machines to clear the road blocks caused by landslides.

During the past 24 hours, "moderate to heavy rainfall" has been reported in parts of the state. Sama in Bageshwar district received the maximum rainfall of 150mm, followed by 110 mm in Didihat in Pithoragarh district, according to the Met centre.

“Monsoon activity remained active in Uttarakhand with some places receiving heavy showers. Light to moderate rain would continue to occur with heavy showers likely at isolated places in Bageshwar and Pithoragarh districts on July 22 and 23,” said Bikram Singh, director, regional meteorological centre. On Wednesday, the Hemkund Sahib yatra was halted after water came gushing down near Ghangriya in Chamoli and washed away a wooden log bridge. The yatra restarted on Thursday.
