Perth top WBBL as rain ruins double header

Perth Scorchers climbed back to the top of the WBBL and Sydney Thunder continued their resurgence, but rain was the only winner in Sunday's double-header at the WACA.

While 13.4 overs were bowled in the first game in Perth between Thunder and Melbourne Stars, no play was possible in the second match between the Scorchers and the Hurricanes.

The Hurricanes won the toss and elected to field, but the rain returned soon before the game was due to start.

The no-result lifted Perth to seven points, one clear of Brisbane Heat, who were ahead of them on net run rate

It was a frustrating weekend in their home state for the Scorchers, who won their first three games but lost to the previously winless Thunder on Saturday

The Hurricanes remained fourth, while Thunder rose to outright fifth ahead of Adelaide, and the winless Stars stay bottom despite gaining their first point of the season after three losses.

Thunder followed their upset win over Perth by racing to 1-102 before a second burst of rain ended Sunday's game.

Phoebe Litchfield (50 off 34 balls) and England captain Amy Jones. (44 off 46) put on 101 for the second wicket after Thunder were sent in.

Litchfield, who almost doubled her previous highest score of the season, played shots all around the ground, striking seven fours and a six.

Jones proved the perfect foil, finding the boundary five times, as she also compiled her biggest score of the current WBBL campaign.

They took control of the game after Jones's compatriot Tammy Beaumont was run out off the second legitimate delivery of the innings.

Beaumont, who topscored with an unbeaten 77 in Thunder's win over the Scorchers, was run out by a direct hit from cover from Tess Flintoff.

Jones and Litchfield scored freely until the first rain break after 13.1 overs.

When play resumed, only three more balls were bowled and two runs added, but the first of those runs brought up Litchfield's half century and the century stand for the second wicket pair.

Thunder's next game will be against the Heat in Brisbane on Tuesday, while the Stars face Melbourne rivals the Renegades In Ballarat on Saturday.

The Scorchers meet the Strikers in Brisbane on Friday and the Hurricanes clash with the Sydney Sixers in Ballarat the following day.
