Raids at Bihar education dept official's home, office unearth Rs14 lakh in cash

PATNA: Vigilance teams conducted raids at multiple locations of district education officer Siwan, Mithilesh Kumar on Friday in connection with a disproportionate asset case registered against him and unearthed Rs14 lakh in cash and jewelries following extensive raids that continued all through the day.

Acting on a complaint petition registered against the official, various teams of vigilance department raided the office and residence of the education department officials in Patna and Siwan and stumbled upon unaccounted cash. Some four teams of the vigilance department carried out simultaneous raids in various locations, informed sources said.

“We carried out the raids in connection with case no 36/2023 registered against the accused with the vigilance police and recovered around Rs14 lakh in cash during the raids from his office and residence,” vigilance Dy SP Abhay Kumar told the media on Friday. He informed them the raids were conducted after they got information about his disproportionate assets during the course of confidential inquiry at their level.

Another senior vigilance official Sanjay Jaiswal said the vigilance teams found some bank accounts in the joint name of the official and his wife, bank lockers and land deeds. “We are investigating into the matter and will be able to say anything only after proper investigation,” Jaiswal said, adding the raiding teams also recovered ornaments during the raids.

“We have sought help from the goldsmith to know about the value of jewellery recovered during the raids,” the official said, adding a 10-member vigilance team was involved in raids.
