Rahul Dravid not keen to re-apply; VVS Laxman unlikely to vie for India's head coach post: Report

NEW DELHI: As the tenure of Rahul Dravid as the head coach of Team India ends after the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has initiated the process to fill the prestigious position. BCCI has invited applications for the top job with a tenure of three and a half years.

The application deadline is set for May 27, 2024, with the new head coach expected to take charge from July 1, immediately after the conclusion of the T20 World Cup.

According to a report on Sportstar, Dravid has not expressed interest in seeking an extension, even though a group of Team India veterans has urged him to reconsider his decision. However, Dravid remains firm in his resolve to prioritize family time, as conveyed to the BCCI earlier.

VVS Laxman, the current head of the National Cricket Academy (NCA), is also unlikely to vie for the head coach position as per the report, despite being considered a frontrunner. Laxman has been instrumental in his role at the NCA for the past three years and has also served as stand-in coach for Team India during Dravid's absence, showcasing his coaching credentials.

With Dravid's impending departure and Laxman's reluctance to enter the fray, attention has turned to IPL head coaches as potential candidates for the top job.

Reports suggest that Stephen Fleming of Chennai Super Kings and Justin Langer of Lucknow Super Giants are among the top contenders who could express interest in the position after the T20 World Cup.

As the search for India's next head coach unfolds, the BCCI remains focused on securing a suitable candidate to lead the men's senior team into the next phase of international cricket.
