Kozhikode
M.K. Raghavan, Kozhikode MP, on Friday moved three private members Bills in Parliament, seeking the formation of a legislature for Lakshadweep, declaration of health as fundamental right and the launch of a universal health insurance policy.
In the first Bill, Mr. Raghavan stated that the Administrator’s rule in Lakshadweep had been spoiling the role of people’s representatives for over 75 years. He said that the system of democracy was denied to residents of the islands.
Moving the Bill for declaring health as a fundamental right, Mr. Raghavan said that it was an integral part of the citizens’ right to live. He explained that the need had already been interpreted well in many judicial verdicts.
In his Bill on universal insurance, Mr. Raghavan said it could be implemented on the basis of the already distributed health cards. Such a policy-level decision would ensure free treatment, hospitalisation and follow-up treatment for all Indian citizens through the government and networked hospitals in the country, he said.
