Radford woman 'too scared to sleep' after fence falls to ground leaving garden open on main road

A woman who found her fence broken to the ground says she fears to sleep at night. Christine Kneen, 61, said she was too distraught to fall asleep in fear that someone might break into her house, with her garden now completely open to the main road.

Ms Kneen, who cares for her disabled partner, has spotted the shocking scene on March 21, and reported it to her housing association straight away. The couple, who live in Wansbeck Close in Radford, reported the incident to the Metropolitan housing association straight away.

However, more than a week has passed by and nothing has been done about it, Ms Kneen said. Now she said she asw feeling vulnerable and scared. "I cannot go to sleep until around 2 or 3 in the morning. I am just scared that someone may come into the backyard and break into our house."

Ms Kneen said it might have been the weather that weakened the fence. "It was leaning a bit when the storms were really bad. But one day I just saw it broken to the ground. And now it is like free entry to strangers and anyone really."

She went on and said: "We do not have anything expensive in the garden, just some plastic chairs and a table - but what if someone would break in one day? We are planning to go away in the summer and I am just scared to leave it like this."

Ms Kneen said she was feeling vulnerable and that she hoped that the housing association would address her concerns. "I called them straight away, at 8am that day. But I have not heard back from them.

" We need a stronger fence - I am just very vulnerable. It is dangerous. Anyone could come in and steal from us or worse. We are completely exposed, there is nothing to protect us."

An MTVH spokesperson said: “We are well aware of Ms Kneen’s broken fence which she told us about on 21st March. Sadly, Storm Eunice at the beginning of March caused widespread damage, resulting in lots of reports of damaged and broken fencing. To make sure we can deal with the workload effectively, we’ve been prioritising to work on the most urgent cases first.

We explained this to Ms Kneen when she phoned us and added her broken fence to our work schedule accordingly. "We’re pleased to say our contractors are due to inspect the site this afternoon (Thursday) to measure up.

They will then be in touch with Ms Kneen to arrange a date and time to complete the repair. We really appreciate that Ms Kneen and other residents have been patient while we’ve worked through the very large amount of work that Storm Eunice left us with.”
