Lots of people in Radford say they “would rather not” see another takeaway open on Alfreton Road. The road is home to many stores including takeaways and restaurants.
An application has been submitted to turn 58 Alfreton Road, an old barbers shop into an Indian takeaway but some people would like to see a change. The application to transform the old barbers shop is “pending consideration.”
People would like to see either more sit down restaurants or more independent businesses. The application for the proposal was received last December.

On Alfreton Road, people told Nottinghamshire Live how there’s “too many” takeaways. Nadia Hussain, 29 likes all the small independent businesses already on Alfreton Road. She said: “The hair shops and barbers are always packed, people use those daily. There’s the Kaya Food shop that people use too and a phone shop, they’re the things that are needed.
“When it comes to the takeaways though it’s a difficult one because there’s just too many of them and I always think ‘surely people don’t use all of these.’”
Nadia who lives in Radford is a full time mum. She continued: “I’m not a health guru or anything like that and I do love a takeaway but there’s just too many of the same around here.”
Peter O’Hanlon lives in Radford. Peter would rather see more independent shops than a takeaway store opening.
Peter, 53 said: “There’s way too many [takeaways]. You want shops selling all different things.
“I don’t use them [the takeaways] I just keep count! I’d like to see a bit more diversity and not every takeaway that sells the same thing.”
The nurse added: “Tipoo is nice but that’s more of a restaurant not a takeaway.”
James Cameron, 35 “would rather not” see another takeaway. He doesn’t however know what he’d like to see replace the former barber shop.
The gym instructor told Nottinghamshire Live: “I would rather not see another takeaway but this area is filled with so many takeaways and restaurants it makes sense that somebody’s wanting to open a takeaway here.”
The Radford resident continued: “There’s a good spirit around here, I do like Radford and all its diversity and if an Indian takeaway opens chances are it probably would do well but it’s just not something that the area needs with all the other options.”
One person who wished to remain anonymous would be open to the idea of a new takeaway. In the area they said that there’s many takeaways that sell a lot of Turkish food.
They said: “I don’t see anything wrong with it [having another takeaway open] this area’s multicultural so you’d expect to have that here. Most takeaways are Turkish here. It would be nice to see another cultured cuisine, that would be different, possibly Mexican food.”
