Rachel Cruze’s 7 Signs You’re Headed Toward Millionaire Status

Even millionaires don’t consider themselves wealthy in 2025. In fact, according to new research from Northwestern Mutual, only 36% of American millionaires consider themselves wealthy.

Perhaps you don’t consider yourself a millionaire or wealthy. But, according to money expert Rachel Cruze in a recent YouTube video, here are some signs you’re already headed toward millionaire status.

Investing 15% for Retirement

According to Cruze, “The first subtle sign that you are getting ahead financially is consistently investing in retirement… I know, so boring… but this is foolproof.”

She said to fund 15% of your income into retirement after you’re debt-free and after you have a fully funded emergency fund. Cruze said to do it consistently month after month and year after year. It helps you take advantage of growth.

Paying Off Your House Early

Cruze noted this is two-fold — paying off your mortgage early “adds to your net worth, but it also adds to your peace of mind.”

“That housing line item in your budget is always the most expensive, and so if you are a renter for your entire life, that is just going to continue to increase and take part of your budget,” she continued.

Actively Working To Get Out of Debt

A lot of people just maintain their debts their entire lives and it’s just part of it, per Cruze. Instead, she suggested making a promise to yourself to get out of debt and free up your money for saving and investing.

Not Cutting Corners

You may have been hoping this sign wasn’t on the list. Unfortunately, Cruze said not to be afraid of hard work. Overall, she pointed out that life is about slow and steady progress. You’re going to have times when you’re working hard and really going at it — and some times where you pull back.

Using a Written Shopping List

The biggest mistake people make with their money is they’re not intentional,” Cruze said. “They don’t know where it’s going. They don’t know what it’s doing.”

According to Cruze, having a written shopping list you’re using means you have intentionality and discipline. You’re not making purchases based on emotion.

You Look and Act Average

Cruze gets straight to the point with this sign. She said many people have built wealth and kept it because they don’t care what others think of them. If this is you, it may look like avoiding spending your money on status symbols and instead focusing on value and prioritizing saving.

Not Being Afraid To Say ‘No’

“This goes for your kids, your social life, the latest trend on the Internet, whatever it is. When you can say no, there is something again about delaying gratification,” Cruze said. In order to do, you usually need to be thinking long-term and prioritizing your financial goals.
