A sick raccoon found in the backyard of a Westlake Village home has tested positive for rabies, the first rabid raccoon confirmed in Los Angeles County since 1973. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health announced the case on Oct. 5, 2026, according to KESQ. The animal reportedly appeared sick but was not aggressive toward people.
The case stands out because nearly all of the county's recent rabies activity has involved bats. Raccoons, by contrast, raid trash cans, eat pet food left on patios and wander through yards where dogs, children and outdoor workers spend time.
