In 1997, a young Japanese artist spent long nights in a small studio working on a story about a lonely boy who carried a powerful monster inside him. At the time, the idea went against what most manga publishers wanted. Main characters were expected to be easy to like, not social outcasts with painful pasts. Some people believed the story was too dark to succeed in a popular magazine.
