Lao Tzu (also written as Laozi) was an ancient Chinese philosopher and writer, traditionally considered the founder of Taoism (or Daoism). He is believed to have lived around the 6th century BCE, roughly around the same time as Confucius. Legend says he worked as a scholar and keeper of the royal archives for the Zhou dynasty before growing weary of society's corruption, riding off into the west on a water buffalo, and writing the Tao Te Ching, the central text of Taoist thought, before disappearing.
