Pain is one of the few experiences that can change the way people see themselves and the world around them. For Lebanese-American poet and writer Khalil Gibran, suffering was not simply something to endure or escape. He saw it as a difficult force that could open the mind to deeper understanding. In his celebrated 1923 book The Prophet, Gibran wrote, “Your pain is the breaking of the shell that encloses your understanding.” The line appears in the chapter “On Pain”, where he presents suffering as part of the process through which people grow and discover aspects of themselves that may otherwise remain hidden. More than a century after The Prophet was published, the quote continues to resonate with readers facing grief, setbacks and personal transformation.
