Who Is Ashanti

Ashanti Douglas, better known simply as Ashanti, made a huge impact on R&B and pop music in the early 2000s. The singer, songwriter, model and actress was discovered as a teenager and signed with Murder Inc. in 2002, as per an AAE Music report.

Ashanti’s Rise to Fame

Ashanti quickly became a familiar name after appearing on Fat Joe’s “What’s Luv?” and Ja Rule’s “Always on Time.” Her own hit, “Foolish,” went to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

She also made chart history that year by becoming the first female artist to hold the top two spots on the Billboard Hot 100 at the same time, with “Foolish” at No. 1 and “What’s Luv?” at No. 2.

Ashanti’s Debut Album

Her self-titled debut album arrived in 2002 and sold more than 505,000 copies in its first week in the US. The album went triple platinum in the US and sold six million copies worldwide by the end of 2003, as per the AAE Music report.

It also earned Ashanti eight Billboard Music Awards, two American Music Awards and a Grammy for Best Contemporary R&B Album.

Ashanti’s Music Career

Ashanti followed her debut with Chapter II in 2003. The album opened at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and went platinum, with hits including “Rock wit U (Awww Baby)” and “Rain on Me.”

She released Concrete Rose in 2004, followed by The Declaration in 2008 and Braveheart in 2014.

Ashanti also contributed vocals and songwriting to Jennifer Lopez’s “Ain’t It Funny (Murder Remix),” which topped the Billboard Hot 100, as per the AAE Music report.

Ashanti’s Acting Career

Music was not Ashanti’s only career. She made her feature film debut in Coach Carter in 2005, alongside Samuel L. Jackson, and also starred as Dorothy Gale in The Muppets’ Wizard of Oz.

She later appeared in John Tucker Must Die and Resident Evil: Extinction. She also reunited with Ja Rule for The Hamilton Mixtape.

Ashanti’s Musical Influences

Ashanti has cited Ella Fitzgerald, Whitney Houston, Mary J. Blige and Michael Jackson as some of her musical influences.
