You sit down to finish an important report, but first you decide to make coffee. Then you check your phone. A message needs a reply. You open social media for “just five minutes.” Suddenly, an hour has passed, the report is still untouched, and somehow you feel more entertained than you would have been if you had simply had nothing planned.
It is a familiar kind of procrastination. The more things waiting on your to-do list, the easier it can become to find something else to do. Having no responsibilities can feel dull. Having plenty of them, and choosing not to deal with them just yet can feel strangely enjoyable.
