Queen's Platinum Jubilee - events being staged to celebrate Her Majesty's 70-year reign

People across the UK and other parts of the world have started their celebrations to mark the Queen's 70 years as monarch. Tributes are being paid to Her Majesty as the Royal Family come together for the occasion.

Today (June 2) if the start of a special four-day Bank Holiday set up to commemorate the Queen's reign. During it, people across the country will be holding street parties and other events to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee.

Along with these, the royals will also be attending several events across the days which has been organised to mark the anniversary of Her Majesty's reign. Here is a rundown of the events taking place.

Thursday, June 2

Trooping the Colour will begin the celebrations, although Prince Charles will be deputising for the Queen at the event. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will also be at the event alongside their relatives who they have reportedly fallen out with since the couple moved to North America and stopped being working royals.

The Queen will acknowledge the salute from Buckingham Palace's balcony of the returning Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment after the ceremony. the 96-year-old will be joined later by other Royal Family members for a flypast of aircraft including Spitfires and the RAF Red Arrows.

This evening, more than 3,000 beacons are set to be lit around the UK and other Commonwealth nations with the Queen lighting the principle Jubilee beacon at Windsor Castle. The armed forces will also pay tribute to Her Majesty with a double gun salute.

Friday, June 3

On Friday, St Paul's Cathedral will hold a service of thanksgiving for the Queen. It is not clear yet if the 96-year-old will attend due to her recent mobility issues.

Saturday, June 4

The 2022 Epsom Derby is taking place, but it has already been confirmed that the Queen will not attend. However, other Royal Family members will be in attendance at the famous race.

It is reported though that the monarch will meet her great-granddaughter Lilibet for the first time on what will be the child's first birthday. The Queen has not seen the youngest child of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex since her birth after Harry and Meghan controversially moved to North America and stepped away from royal duties.

On Saturday evening, the BBC's Party at the Palace will be taking place with stages set up in front of Buckingham Palace. Crowds of 22,000 are expected for the event which will be broadcast on the BBC and feature acts including Diana Ross, Queen + Adam Lambert, Alicia Keys, Nile Rodgers, Andrea Bocelli, Duran Duran, Bond composer Hans Zimmer, Ella Eyre, Craig David, Mabel, Elbow and George Ezra. Prince Charles and the Duke of Cambridge are also due to give personal tributes to the Queen at the event.

Sunday, June 5

On the final day of the Bank Holiday, street parties are set to be staged across the UK, with more than 85,000 expected to take place. There will also be a Jubilee Pageant on London's streets as 6,000 performers and around 200 celebrities join the carnival.

It is hoped Her Majesty will make an appearance on the Buckingham Palace during the day. Ed Sheeran is set to round-up the weekend by performing the national anthem alongside a choir consisting of British 'national treasures'.
