The 2025 measles outbreak in New Mexico cost an estimated $5.4 million, or about $53,500 for every confirmed case, according to a new analysis by economists at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and epidemiologists at the New Mexico Department of Health.
Direct medical care accounted for only $290,148 of that total. The rest came from the public health response and from lost work and school time among patients, caregivers, and people who had to quarantine after an exposure.
