Queen's Jubilee: Only one street party set to be held in the whole of South Lanarkshire

It is known as the Royal Burgh - but residents of a South Lanarkshire town might feel they've been crowned by default next month.

For Rutherglen is set to be the only place in the region to hold a street party for the Queen's platinum jubilee next month.

South Lanarkshire Council has confirmed the sole application for the area has come for the town's Western Avenue, and is being organised by members of Rutherglen West and Wardlawhill Church.

The proposal for the day states: "We are planning a community street party to celebrate our Queen’s Jubilee with our neighbours and friends.

"This is a momentous occasion and we hope to replicate the success of H.M. Diamond Jubilee 10 years ago when we had a memorable day of celebration which was televised by the BBC whose team was passing and observed our street party being enjoyed by families of all ages, from babes in arms to ninety plus year old guests engaged in singing and dancing.

"We invite children/youth/adult groups to participate in competitions and enjoy our hospitality."

South Lanarkshire Council has approved the application, while the platinum jubilee itself marks 70 years of the Queen's reign, with a four-day bank holiday running from Thursday June 2 through until Sunday June 5.

The street party might be greeted with scepticism by some, after recent incidents in the town's Main Street saw Union Jacks ripped down following a parade by a local flute band, prompting a row over flags being displayed in the area.

Other parts of Scotland have seen a higher rate of applications, including at least 17 in Edinburgh and eight for Aberdeen.

A number is not yet available for Glasgow.

Critics of the monarchy say the lack of numbers point to a declining interest and support for the Royal Family.

David McClermont of the South Lanarkshire branch of the Scottish Green Party said: “I think when so many people are struggling with the cost of living crisis the idea of celebrating someone who has lived a life of unimaginable privilege at tax payers expense probably doesn’t seem like a priority.

"I think this is also a reflection that the monarchy is an outmoded, outdated institution that has little relevance to the lives of ordinary people. The Scottish Green Party looks forward to the day that Scotland takes its place as an independent, modern, European Republic with a Head of State elected by the people."

A spokesperson for the Lord Lieutenant of Lanarkshire, Lady Susan Haughey, said that they welcomed the event.

They stated: "Lord Lieutenant Lady Haughey CBE is delighted that the Rutherglen West and Wardlawhill Church is holding this event which will be one of many which will be taking place right across Lanarkshire celebrating Her Majesty the Queen's Platinum Jubilee."

A Scottish Government spokesperson said: "The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee is a significant milestone and the Scottish Government welcomes the celebrations which will take place across the country throughout this special year.

"Jubilee celebrations are commonly community-led and government officials are ensuring Lord-Lieutenants, community councils and local authorities are informed of opportunities to be involved in the celebrations."
