Queen put 'duty ahead of family' when she snubbed Charles and Camilla's wedding

This weekend marks 17 years since Prince Charles finally tied the knot with Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall.

Their civil wedding ceremony, which was held in Windsor Guildhall, saw both sides of their families come together to witness their union.

However, there was one very important person that was missing from the ceremony that day - the Queen.

Despite giving the marriage her blessing, when the wedding day itself came she and Prince Philip did not attend the civil ceremony - and only went to the church blessing and wedding reception.

Both Charles and Camilla had previously been married before - Charles to Princess Diana and Camilla to Andrew Parker Bowles.

This meant that the couple had both previously been divorced - something that the Church of England does not always approve of, meaning this was why they had a civil ceremony.

Head of the Church of England is the Queen - and this reportedly was behind her decision not to attend the ceremony.

Writing in The Telegraph in April 2005, Andrew Alderson explained: "The Queen has let it be known that the reason she will not be attending the wedding of Prince of Wales is because she is putting her duties as the head of the Church of England before family feelings."

She reportedly told a friend: "I am not able to go. I do not feel that my position [as Supreme Governor of the Church of England] permits it."

She and Philip did attend the church blessing in St George's Chapel as well as the reception, which happened to be taking place on the same day as the 2005 Grand National.

And during the reception, Her Majesty reportedly made a touching speech, where she referenced the race, in which she had a horse running.

During her words, she announced that the horse Hedgehunter had been victorious in the famous race before saying she was also delighted to be welcoming her son and his bride to the "winners enclosure".

She said: "They have overcome Becher's Brook and The Chair and all kinds of other terrible obstacles.

"They have come through and I'm very proud and wish them well.

"My son is home and dry with the woman he loves."
