Queen of the South defender says team looking up after Clyde win

Paul McKay says Queen of the South are looking up after their win away to Clyde.

The defender returned from injury to captain the side to a 2-1 victory at the ZLX Stadium, meaning the Doonhamers have built a nine point gap on the bottom two sides and are now chasing the playoff spots.

It was also a revenge mission for Clyde beating Queens on the opening day.

He said: “They were three much needed points with Clyde being so near us in the table.

“If they picked up the three points they would’ve been catching us, so it’s good to get the three points to start creating a gap and start looking up the way.

“The fans were looking for a reaction from that opening day game and we owed them one, so hopefully that’s put that right.

“We mentioned in the dressing room that we’re putting a run together and trying to catch up the teams in front of us.”

McKay was a late addition to the starting 11 due to Iain Wilson’s injury.

With Josh Todd also out, the former Leeds United man was given the armband before he was taken off after 62 minutes.

He said: “I knew before the game Iain Wilson was touch and go, so I was prepared. The gaffer said I was starting, so I went out there and tried to do my job.

“I feel fine. It was precaution to take me off and I feel good.

“That was one game as captain and one win, so if he asks me to be captain again hopefully I can keep that going.

“It was an honour to captain the club. The gaffer has gave me more responsibility, so hopefully I’ve paid him back.”

Queens showed they are capable of grinding out a result and McKay said he has plenty of experience of that at this level.

He said: “If we need to win dirty then that’s what we need to do.

“Sometimes you need to roll your sleeves up and dig in and everybody has to work for each other.

“I’ve played in this league for three seasons, so I know what’s required and we’ve shown we can do the other side as well.”

Falkirk come to Palmerston with the South eyeing up more revenge after the Bairns won 3-1 in August.

The 25-year-old said: “Falkirk gave us a tough game the last time we were up there and we’re looking to put that right and hopefully we can climb the table.”

Queen of the South were drawn away to Morton in the third round of the Scottish Cup. The tie will be played on the weekend of November 26 with the date to be confirmed.
