Queen of the South boss urges players to be stronger after "embarrassing" half hour against Alloa

Following an “embarrassing” half hour against Alloa, Queens manager Wullie Gibson has urged his players to have a better attitude and be stronger.

After dominating for an hour in Clackmannanshire, Queens crumbled and conceded three goals in the space of five minutes which resulted in a heavy 5-1 defeat.

Gibson said: “The second half was just embarrassing, we conceded three goals in five minutes, just long balls into the box, soft, free headers, it is just simply not good enough and I’m very angry.

“I’ve said a few words, but we will address it because I could really say something.

“In terms of when it is going all right, when we are winning games like last week and having performances like that, everyone is willing to take a pat on the back but when it’s like the second half there, they don’t want to hear the truth so we will sit down and assess it because it is far from good enough”.

The boss is now looking for characters to stand up and be counted.

“I see it every day in training, there are certain characters that others look up to but I looked around and I didn’t see them, they were missing in the second half and we paid the heavy price,” Gibson said.

“Alloa thoroughly deserved to win in the second half, it’s a sore one and we have got to reassess things because things haven’t been good enough.

“When we have had our backs to the wall and been under a bit of pressure, we give a performance like last week but there is no consistency to turn that round and go and win. The first half we played well and were on top, Alloa got the goal right on half-time but there are no excuses, we didn’t change anything, the system was the same, you can look for excuses, players can look for excuses, we didn’t perform and we paid the price.”

The Palmerston chief spent the weekend pondering what went wrong and will now spend the week reflecting with the players.

He added: “I won’t put it away, I will be looking at it from now. If things don’t work it won’t be for the lack of trying.

“I will do everything I can, but I expect the players to come in with a different attitude.”
