Queen Elizabeth II dies aged 96

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has died aged 96.

Buckingham Palace today confirmed that the Monarch Queen Elizabeth had died at Balmoral.

Buckingham Palace said: "The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow. "

On Thursday Buckingham Palace released a statement stating concern for the Queen’s health. It read: “Following further evaluation this morning, The Queen’s doctors are concerned for Her Majesty’s health and have recommended she remain under medical supervision. The Queen remains comfortable and at Balmoral.”

Prominent members of the Royal Family, including Prince Charles and Prince William, rushed to Balmoral following the statement to be by the Queen’s bedside.

The Queen has battled several health issues over the past year and missed two days of her Platinum Jubilee celebrations because of “discomfort” and mobility issues.

In February Her Majesty also tested positive for coronavirus and cancelled her planned virtual engagements as she suffered with the symptoms of covid.

Queen Elizabeth has reigned as monarch for 70 years and ascended to the throne after her father, King George VI died following a battle with lung cancer on February 6, 1952.

The Queen, aged just 25, was informed of the news of her father’s death while she was in Kenya on a royal tour. Mindful of her duty she immediately flew home and took up her role as head of state.

The Queen made a solemn vow on her 21st birthday in her address to the Commonwealth. She said: “I declare before you all that my whole life whether it be long or short shall be devoted to your service and the service of our great imperial family to which we all belong.”

She stuck to her pledge and was the first British monarch to reign for seventy years and large-scale celebrations were planned in honour of her Platinum Jubilee in June.

Her solemn Coronation took place in Westminster Abbey on June 2, 1953, with representatives of Britain, leading citizens of the other Commonwealth countries, and representatives of foreign states all in attendance.

Crowds flocked to view the procession, despite heavy rain, and the ceremony was also broadcast on radio around the world and, at The Queen's request, on television for the first time.

During her long reign the Queen has been served by 14 British Prime Ministers, visited 115 countries, and awarded well over 400,000 honours.

The Queen, who was a royal patron or president to more than 600 charities, has died less than a year after her husband, Prince Philip, who she described as "her rock".

She met Prince Philip when they attended the wedding of Prince Philip's cousin, Princess Marina of Greece to The Duke of Kent, who was an uncle of Princess Elizabeth, in 1934.

Their engagement was announced on July 9, 1947 and the couple were married in Westminster Abbey on November 20, 1947

The event was fairly simple, as Britain was still recovering from the war, and Princess Elizabeth had to collect clothing coupons for her dress, like any other young bride.

They spent their honeymoon at Broadlands, Hampshire, the home of Lord Mountbatten, and at Birkhall, Balmoral.

Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth II have four children, The Prince of Wales, heir apparent to the throne, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward.

Prince Edward and Andrew were the first children to be born to a reigning monarch since Queen Victoria had her family.

The Prince of Wales will become King following the Queen's death and will address the nation soon.

The Queen has eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

The Royal Family will announce plans for the funeral, which will most likely take place 10 days from today at Westminster Abbey.

There will be processions both in London and Windsor, with a committal service taking place at St George’s Chapel.

The Queen will be buried at the King George VI Memorial Chapel in Windsor.
