Notts County’s longest-serving current player, Jim O’Brien, has signed on for a further year, taking him into his sixth season with the club.
The 35-year-old joined the Magpies midway through the 18/19 campaign, with the club fighting against relegation in League Two, and despite making a notable impact, he was unable to stop the club from going down.
In the next season, the Irish midfielder had a torrid time with injuries, which saw him make just 17 league appearances before returning for the playoffs. O’Brien had a much more successful 20/21 campaign, but it ended the same way, in play-off disappointment.

The following season was the same before O’Brien was finally able to experience promotion with the club this summer as the only surviving member from the team that was relegated to non-league in the first place.
The experienced campaigner made 29 appearances for Notts last term, adding five goals from midfield and overall making a big contribution to the team’s overall success as they finally triumphed in the National League play-offs.
Retaining a player with the experience of O’Brien is important for the team on and off the pitch as the club navigate through their first season back in the Football League, which always brings added challenges.
The board of directors and manager Luke Williams penned a short statement: “As he demonstrated last season and in previous campaigns, he has so much to offer with his quality, mentality and tenacity. Having made nearly 550 career appearances, he also has vast experience to share with the group – a role we know he embraces.
“Importantly, he has an incredible connection with our supporters as well. He’s been with them all the way through our relegation, the National League years and our eventual promotion. It’s going to be wonderful to see him represent us in the EFL once again.”
