A former journalist accused of threatening a mental health nurse and warning he would unleash pandemonium on the street after asking about shooting lessons has successfully applied for bail.

James Michael Waugh will be released from custody, but is to receive mental health treatment as an inpatient in Brisbane's Princess Alexandra Hospital.
