Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad missed an opportunity to mend his relationship with the Syrian people during a lull in the country's civil war, as stated by Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani. Al Thani expressed disappointment that Assad did not take advantage of the period when the conflict had subsided to engage with and rebuild trust with his people. The lack of progress on the return of refugees and reconciliation efforts was noted by Al Thani.
Currently, rebel forces in Syria are making significant advances, swiftly capturing cities that were previously under Assad's control in both the northern and southern regions of the country. Over the past 10 days, opposition troops have seized at least four cities, surprising observers worldwide with the speed of their progress.
Al Thani, who also serves as Qatar’s foreign minister, emphasized the need for a political and sustainable resolution to the crisis. He expressed concerns that the ongoing developments could reignite internal violence and civil war, posing a threat to Syria's territorial integrity. Al Thani stressed the urgency of establishing a political framework to address the situation and prevent further damage to what remains of the country.
