Qatar is reportedly ready to make a serious bid to host the Olympics in Doha in 2036.
The FIFA World Cup is now at its quarter-final stage with the competition played against a backdrop of human rights issues, including Qatar's treatment of women, migrant workers and the LGBTQ+ community.
There has been some uncertainty over what would happen with the stadiums purposely-built for the World Cup after its conclusion but the infrastructure could boost the country's chances of landing the Olympics.
The Sun reports Doha would be able to host a "low cost" Games and believes the World Cup proves their capabilities of hosting a global sporting event.
It is claimed the Gulf state would look to hold the Games in November, as per the World Cup, although that could be tricky given the summer schedule has been in place since its inception. The Winter Olympics are also due to be held in 2034 and 2038.
Doha are said to be keen to go it alone although there may be pressure from the International Olympic Committee to launch a joint bid with Saudi Arabia.
There is likely to be competition for the Games in 2036, with Mumbai, Jakarta and Istanbul also reported to be in the running.
But that will not deter the Gulf state who are ready to tackle the obstacles standing in their way, having already got stadiums and an impressive transport system in operation.
Many believe the sporting competition has been a success in Qatar at the World Cup but that does not distract from the wider issues away from football.
It remains to be seen if the greatest sporting event would follow the tournament's lead however.
A preferred bidder will be nominated by the IOC for the Olympics meaning Qatar will have to persuade broadcasters and sponsors to back their proposal.
Brisbane was awarded the 2032 Olympics with the next two Games to be held in Paris and Los Angeles respectively.
