Q&A: Brian Eno on relaunching Opal Records, 'Music for Airports,' AI and Palestine

Britain Brian Eno Portrait Session - (Copyright 2026 The Associated Press. All rights reserved)

Brian Eno, the multi-hyphenate artist, producer and political activist best known for pioneering ambient music, will relaunch his transformative Opal Records on Friday. Founded in 1988 and put on hiatus in 1991, the label released works by formative names in experimental music: Jon Hassell, John Cale and Eno among them.

But why bring back Opal, and why now? For one, two of its records “had disappeared” and he wanted to rerelease them, Eno told The Associated Press in his home studio. (Collectors are aware: 2005's “Another Day on Earth” and 2001's “Drawn From Life” have been hard to locate outside of Japan.)
