'Putrid' smell keeping people awake in one part of Liverpool

A "putrid" smell plaguing one part of Liverpool is keeping people awake at night.

The odour, which was reported to be lingering in the Hunts Cross area on Monday evening, was described as a "sulphur smell" by some residents. The smell was so pungent in parts of the area people said it was keeping them awake, while others said it was making them feel sick and giving them headaches.

One woman, who has lived in the area for over 30 years, said the smell seems to be getting worse. Posting in a local community group, she said: "That foul, putrid smell lingers across Hunts Cross again tonight. It gives me a headache and I want to be sick.

"It can't be good for our health or the atmosphere! I would love to know where this toxic smell comes from!" Another woman said: "It’s disgusting. I’m trying to sleep and can’t. It smells like sulphur."

A third added: "We had sulphur smells in Hunts Cross in the 1950s and 1960s, it was the factories. It depends on the direction of wind I should think. They sited the factories in Liverpool because it was close to the sea and fresh air.

"Not only we did we have the smells of factories there were coal fires back then and everyone smoked, the fogs were awful. It's a wonder we survived but I'm still here, a lot of people succumbed though. I hope you can find out what the current problem is and perhaps resolve it."

It comes less than a week after people across different areas of Merseyside reported a "horse or cow poo" like smell drifting through the air. The issue affected people in Norris Green, Fazakerley, Wavertree, Fairfield, Old Swan, Everton and even as far as Bootle, with many saying they were forced to close their windows as a result.

It's not yet known what exactly caused the smell but many theories suggested it was manure being spread over nearby fields or coming from a sewage treatment plant.
