Puppy had to have 70% of intestine removed after swallowing toy

Pet experts have issued a warning to dog owners after a five-month-old dog dog ate an entire rope toy, which left him fighting for his life. Red Labrador Rango was left in a critical condition after eating a rope toy that had been left by a visitor.

The toy caused extensive damage to Rango’s small intestine as the rope had unravelled through him. As a result, Rango underwent surgery to have 70% of his small intestine removed. Given his grave condition, vets had little hope that Rango would survive.

Following his surgery, Rango was struggling to consume any food. Despite the odds being against him, Rango's breeder refused to give up and searched for alternative solutions that would be more digestible for him. Rango’s breeder had previously participated in a dog food trial by veterinary students from the University of Glasgow.
