Punk legends The Outcasts back for special Christmas gig at Belfast's Black Box

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas . . . and what better way to get merry than to fill up that advent calendar with some fabulously festive fun as we count down to the big day.

And this year, for the first time since 2019, legendary Belfast punk band The Outcasts will be on hand to provide Christmas cheer with the return of their much-loved ‘Almost Acoustic Christmas Party’.

This time at Belfast’s Black Box on Friday, December 23, the band will perform all their greatest hits from The Cops are Coming and Just Another Teenage Rebel to Self-Conscious Over You with a pared-back acoustic arrangement, perfect for the time of year.

Greg Cowan, lead singer of the band, along with new guitarist Buck Defect and brother Martin on guitar as well as JP on drums, says the gig will be one to remember.

He said: “We’re deliberately going for a really Christmassy, intimate feel, something to get people in the mood the night before Christmas Eve. Being an acoustic show, there will be more chat between songs, plenty of craic and a bit of inter-band slagging.

“We’ll have tables out for people to sit and enjoy and there will be plenty of interaction with the audience, so it’s going to be a really special gig.”

Adding to the Yuletide vibe, The Outcasts will welcome special guests including punk Irish trad band Johnny Hash as well as singer Cara Cowan, who will perform alternative versions of everyone’s favourite Christmas hits. Punk legend Terri ‘Ho Ho’ Hooley will hit the decks with a DJ set too.

Greg said: “Having all these guys on the bill is brilliant. Terri’s a legend and will have everyone on the dancefloor. Cara, who is also Martin’s daughter, is an incredible singer and her take on the Christmas classics will be immense, and what can I say about Johnny Hash? They’re absolutely fantastic. There’s even a late licence too.

“It’s going to be a brilliant night just in time for Christmas, so we hope any punk and music fans out there remember to get their tickets quick.”

The Outcasts Almost Acoustic Christmas Party will be at the Black Box on Friday December 23. Tickets are £15, available from Ticketmaster and The Black Box.
