Punjab woman's death in London: Mehak Sharma's body returns home for final rites amidst allegations of domestic abuse

GURDASPUR: The body of 20-year-old Mehak Sharma, allegedly stabbed to death by her 23-year-old husband Sahil Sharma in London, has been brought to her native village, Jogi Cheema, in Punjab for her final rites.

UK media reports detail the incident, with Mehak, a caretaker, found with fatal neck wounds at her residence in Ash Tree Way, Croydon, South London. Mehak's mother, Madhu Bala, along with other relatives, received her body at Amritsar's Sri Guru Ram Das Ji International Airport.

The somber procession then transported Mehak's remains to her hometown, where a large gathering, comprising nearly the entire village, bid a tearful farewell during the cremation ceremony.

Madhu Bala accused Sahil, who had moved to the UK on a spouse visa, of being unemployed and openly expressing no intention to work, citing his parents' investment in sending Mehak abroad. She revealed that Sahil had subjected Mehak to harassment, threats, physical abuse, and even eviction from their residence in London. Madhu further disclosed that when contacted, Sahil's family demanded the return of Rs 50 lakh invested in sending Mehak abroad.

UK media reported Sahil's court appearance, where he was charged with Mehak's murder and remanded in custody. The Old Bailey court is scheduled for his next appearance on February 2. The body's repatriation to India was facilitated by a UK-based NGO.
