Punjab to go with officiating DGP, no panel sent to UPSC till now

CHANDIGARH: The Aam Aadmi Party(AAP) government in the sensitive border state of Punjab has chosen not to send the panel of senior IPS officers to the Union Public Service Commission(UPSC) for the appointment of permanent head of the state police force and continues to have 1992-batch IPS officer Gaurav Yadav as officiating police chief for over five months in violation of the supreme court directions.

Yadav, who was promoted to the rank of DGP on June 23 was handed over the additional charge of the head of state police force on July 4 by sending the 1987-batch IPS officer and then state police head appointed through the UPSC procedure VK Bhawra on two months leave. Later Bhawra was given the charge of chairman of the Punjab Police Housing Corporation on September 3.

"It is a clear cut violation of the Supreme Court orders. The Supreme Court has made it very clear that no officiating DGP will be appointed," said Prakash Singh, former Director General of BSF and ex-DGP of Uttar Pradesh as well as Assam on whose petition the apex court has laid down the procedure for appointment of state police head.
