Punjab police traffic wing to introduce E-challan across state, induct 150 highway patrol vehicles

CHANDIGARH: In its 11-point agenda for the year 2023, Punjab police’s traffic wing has plans to establish an effective challan system to ensure strict compliance with traffic rules and introduction of E-challan system across the state.

Punjab police ADGP(traffic) AS Rai said that the E-challan sytem will be introduced first in big cities including Ludhiana, Amritsar and Jalandhar. Nearly 1,400 cameras have already been installed in Ludhiana city for the purpose of E-challans and the project has been started, he added.

The traffic wing also has plans to establish a comprehensive highway patrol system by reviving the existing highway patrol and introducing 150 highway patrol vehicles. With an aim to reduce road accidents and fatalities, the traffic wing will promote a sense of responsibility among all users of the road. There are plans to induct road safety professionals to handle the traffic management in a scientific way which can be the first of its kind in the country and 15 road safety professionals will join the traffic police wing this year.

The traffic wing also plans introduction of cutting edge technologies like smart barricades, 5G enabled CCTV camera network, body cameras, contactless challan and speed management system. It also aims to improve the existing infrastructure and facilities in order to ensure smooth and safe traffic management. This includes black spot identification and rectifications, improvement of existing bottlenecks on road infrastructure and regulations for public and para transport systems.

The traffic wing will also focus on research on the causes of traffic congestion and road accidents in the region, identify potential solutions, and develop strategies to reduce their occurrence.
