LUDHIANA: The Ludhiana police on Tuesday arrested a fraudster who impersonating as deputy superintendent of police and inspector used dupe people of money on the pretext of setting their kin involved in criminal cases free.
The city police have also recovered an inspector ranked uniform from his possession, with badges on it, besides one scooter.
The arrested accused has been identified as Sukhmanjeet Singh, 28, of Manohar Nagar, Dhuri Line. His accomplice Makhan of Jagraon has yet to be arrested.
The Commissioner of Police Dr Kaustubh Sharma said that the police arrested the accused following a tip-off. After the arrest, a police uniform has also been recovered from his possession. A couple of days back, the accused had made a phone call to a police station, introducing himself as a DSP, and asked Munshi to make him talk to one accused who was in police custody. Sukhmanjeet, after talking to the accused, took Rs 20,000 from his family on the pretext of getting him free from police custody. Later, the accused was not freed.
Sharma added, the accused had a similar FIR on him earlier too. At times he would introduce himself as a DSP and at times an inspector. Further, he is being questioned from where he got the uniform.
Earlier, on May 24, the Hathur police of Ludhiana rural police had arrested Sukhmanjeet Singh and his accomplice Jeevan Singh of Galib Kalan, for duping a woman Ranjeet Kaur of Hathoor, of Rs 32,000 impersonating as cops, on the pretext of releasing her son who was arrested in a snatching case, on Tuesday.
