Punjab education minister faces his 1st protest at Barnala home

BATHINDA: In less than three weeks of formation of the Aam Aadmi Party government in Punjab, the first protest pertaining to the education sector took place on Sunday, outside the residence of education minister Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer in Barnala.

Elementary teachers’ training (ETT) employees, who are working on deputation in different districts away from their home, demanded cancellation of all deputations and that those who got their transfers in years 2019-20 and 2020-21 be sent to their places of posting.

The education minister though asked teachers to reach Chandigarh on Monday where the issue would be studied in length and solved, the protesting teachers wanted him to immediately call the education secretary and direct him to issue orders to cancel the deputations. Earlier this week, some jobless teachers had climbed atop a water tank in Sangrur, the home district of chief minister Bhagwant Mann, pointing towards the twin districts of Sangrur and Barnala to remain on radar of protesters as in the past most of the protests had been pertaining to education sector.
