The tanker overturned approximately 50 meters ahead of the tunnel in the Borghat stretch, part of the Khandala ghat section in Raigad district. Soon after the accident, gas began leaking from the damaged tanker, prompting authorities to halt traffic in both directions. The resulting logjam stretched for several kilometres, leaving commuters stranded overnight and well into Wednesday.
It was only around 10:30 pm on Wednesday that the transfer of the gas to another tanker was completed. Authorities estimated that after removing the overturned vehicle with a crane, the Mumbai-bound corridor would reopen around 1 am on Thursday.
