Pundits turn on Marcelo Bielsa after Leeds United's hammering against Tottenham

After years of praise for Marcelo Bielsa training techniques, attention to detail and style of football, the critics have started to turn en masse following a string of poor results.

The torrent of criticism came after Bielsa's Leeds United let Tottenham Hotspur score four goals with no response today at Elland Road, just one of four heavy defeats for the Whites this month.

The result has left Leeds just two points above relegation, and the manner of the defeats has prompted pundits to question whether Bielsa is the right man to lead the club to Premier League survival, with the Argentine strongly rumoured to be heading for the exit door.

Speaking on BBC Radio Leeds, former Leeds midfielder Simon Walton said: “It’s not working. The proof is in the pudding that it’s not working.

"Again, don’t go away from this magic word philosophy, but a philosophy in football is score in the opposition’s net and keep it out of your net at the other end. That’s a philosophy is it not?

"And at the minute we’re struggling to do both. so tweaks and changes had to be made. I thought we were all over positionally. We were discussing for 10, 15 minutes in the first half, who was playing here and what formation we were actually playing. It was poor."

Stan Collymore unleashed on his Twitter account: “Problem now for some LUFC fans and media is that when you declare a God you simply can't reverse ferret by admitting the hyperbole and unjustified plaudits was OTT.

"So now it's 'but, but' instead of pointing out issues, short and more worryingly, long term for the next guy.”

Former Aston Villa striker Darren Bent wrote on Twitter: “Leeds defending is so naive. Something needs to change or they will go down."

On beIN Sports, Andy Gray said: “Bielsa seems to be a coach who is stuck with what he believes. He’s stuck with that. What is he, in his sixties now? So he’s not going to change his beliefs now, he really isn’t.”

He added: “We said it against Liverpool. We said it against United. We stood here and said exactly the same things. You cannot play that way. You play man for man marking against better players, you get done. This is what’s happening.”

While Paul Merson said on Sky Sports : "He's pulling the wool over people's eyes. He needs to change things.

"His squad is depleted, I know he's got big players out, but he has to change it. You can't keep going to Liverpools and Man Uniteds and opening games up and get beaten sixes and fours.

"You have to stop it. At the moment, I worry for them, I really worry for them."

Leeds United's next match is on Saturday away to Leicester City.
