Pundits deliver Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace 'new God' verdict

Newcastle United are being tipped to bounce back from defeat at Anfield with win against Crystal Palace. The Magpies conceded a late winner despite a resolute performance against Liverpool, Fabio Carvalho's late strike enough to end the unbeaten run.

Eddie Howe's side remain unbeaten at home and held Pep Guardiola's Manchester City to a 3-3 draw last time on home soil. United looked as though they'd done enough to win the game, but a strong finish to the second-half ensured a share of the spoils.

Palace are just one point behind the Magpies after a steady start to the campaign. The Eagles have played Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal in their opening five games - and like Newcastle - have come out with a respectable points tally.

Here's what the pundits are predicting for this weekend's game:

Chris Sutton

The former Blackburn Rovers striker told BBC Sport: "I like Palace under Patrick Vieira and I like Newcastle under Eddie Howe. Newcastle really took the game to Liverpool.

"I didn't realise Alexander Isak was going to play in that game and he took his chance well and got his goal. Newcastle are at home. They beat Nottingham Forest on the opening day and ran Manchester City really close and I think they will have a bit too much for Palace.

"Wilfried Zaha scored a brilliant goal against Brentford and they do have some really good players but Newcastle will edge this. Prediction: Newcastle United 2-1 Crystal Palace"

Paul Merson

Speaking to Sportskeeda, Merson said: "This should be a good game. Newcastle were unlucky against Liverpool the other day. They defended really well against Liverpool in the first half, but they were never really a threat in the second half.

"I thought they were bang unlucky - I don't know where they got all that time added at the end of the game. I like Alexander Isak - the kid did really well against a top Premier League team, and he's a good player.

"If Crystal Palace play the way they did against Manchester City in the first half, they can win this game. Newcastle have done well this season as well, and I think we'll see another draw here. Prediction: Newcastle United 1-1 Crystal Palace"

Mark Lawrenson

The former Liverpool defender told Paddy Power: "Palace were pulled back by Brentford and Newcastle had a late loss to Liverpool in the week. Eddie Howe wasn’t too happy with having a day less than Liverpool to prepare.

"Alexander Isak was very lively at Anfield and he really comes alive in the box. He was up there on his own.

"I think the Geordie faithful might have a new God! Prediction: Newcastle 2-0 Crystal Palace."
