Puffy Cloud vs Leesa Original: Which memory foam mattress suits your sleep?

Images of Leesa mattress and Puffy Cloud mattress side by side.

Memory foam mattresses are deservedly popular, with plenty of contouring and pressure relief that can suit a variety of sleepers. And, if you’re in the market for an all-foam mattress, Puffy and Leesa should definitely be on your shortlist. But these mattresses offer different features for different sleepers, so which one should you choose?

Like many of this year’s best mattresses for all sleepers, both the Puffy Cloud and Leesa Original usually have offers or discounts available, bringing the price of the mattresses into the mid-range territory. And both feature in our best memory foam mattresses round up, with plenty to recommend them to sleepers.

In this Puffy Cloud vs Leesa Original mattress comparison, we analyze both beds in terms of price, design, support, comfort and temperature regulation. And with both mattresses in this month’s mattress sales, it could be the perfect time to grab a bargain.

Puffy Cloud vs Leesa Original: Key differences

Puffy Cloud vs Leesa Original: Price & Trial

  • Puffy offer some of the most generous discounts in the mattress market, with anywhere from $750 - $1,350 off the price of a mattress
  • Leesa is currently offering 25% off all mattress sizes, along with two free pillows
  • You’ll get a lifetime warranty with the Puffy, but only 10 years with the Leesa

On first glance, Puffy mattresses look ridiculously expensive. But don’t be fooled by the MSRP – the mattresses are always on sale. We’ve seen between $750 and $1,350 (and $2,700 off the Split King size) off the Puffy, meaning a queen size mattress can be as low as $1,049 (MSRP $2,399), with this being the current offer.

And if you’re military, work in healthcare or are a student or educator, you could get up to $1,450 off. You’ll also get a 101-night trial with the Puffy, along with a lifetime warranty and free shipping to your door. This month, you’ll need to enter code SEPTSALE at checkout to get the discount, which also throws in a luxury bedding bundle of pillows, sheets and a mattress protector.

As with the Leesa, there’s almost always a Leesa mattress sale on. Leesa’s current extended Labor Day sale takes 25% off all sizes and throws in two free pillows as well. This means you can pick up a queen size mattress for $999 (MSRP $1,332). There is also a Leesa Amazon store, where you can find deals cropping up from time to time. But in general, if the prices are the same, we’d recommend buying directly from Leesa, this way you’ll get a 100-night trial, 10-year warranty and free shipping.

Puffy Cloud vs Leesa Original: Materials & Design

  • The Puffy Cloud is a 10” memory foam mattress with six layers
  • The Leesa Original is also 10” and made from memory foam, with four layers
  • Both mattresses are of an all-foam construction

The Puffy Cloud starts with a polyester blend soft cover that’s hypoallergenic and stain-resistant (you can also zip it off to wash it). Underneath the cover is Puffy’s ‘Cooling Cloud’ gel memory foam layer for pressure relief, followed by a transition layer of responsive polyfoam to manage temperature.

The base layer is a 6” layer of high-density foam to stabilize the mattress, rounded off by a grip base cover to prevent the mattress from sliding about. All the foams in the Puffy are Certi-PUR US certified, meaning they’re free from harmful chemicals and heavy metals, as well as being produced without certain toxic materials.

The Leesa Original starts with a gray knit cover for breathability and softness, followed by a comfort layer of breathable foam for a gentle hug and bounce. Next up is a memory foam recovery layer that contours to the body to relieve pressure points and the mattress is finished off with a high-density foam bases for structure and durability.

Designed and assembled in the US, the Leesa Original has been awarded Greenguard Gold certification, meaning it contains low VOC (volatile organic compound) emissions and is better for the environment.

Puffy Cloud vs Leesa Original: Support & Comfort

  • The Puffy Cloud is a medium firm mattress which we rate as a 7/10
  • The Leesa Original is also a medium firm mattress, which we rated at 7/10
  • Both mattresses are on the firmer side for all-foam mattresses

Puffy rate the Cloud mattress at between six and eight out of 10 on the firmness scale – our tester felt it was more of a seven out of 10. There is a slight sink-in feeling with the Puffy, but you won’t feel enveloped by the mattress and, with a medium firm feel, there’s no traditional memory foam ‘hug’.

In our Puffy Cloud mattress review we felt that the mattress was particularly suited to back sleepers with aches and pains, with the firmer surface providing plenty of pressure relief and lumbar support. This isn’t surprising, as many of the best mattresses for back pain have a medium firm feel. Side sleepers who prefer a firmer feel should also like the Puffy, but lightweight sleepers may not feel that there’s enough cushioning for their joints.

The Leesa Original is rated at five to seven out of 10 by the brand but in our Leesa Original mattress review, our tester felt that it slept at the higher end of this scale. If you’re looking for more contouring and cushioning, the Leesa is the mattress to choose, providing a classic foam experience.

Like many of the best mattresses for side sleepers, it provides plenty of cushioning for pressure points and we also felt that it would suit many back sleepers. However, it’s not supportive enough for stomach sleepers or those of a heavier build, who would benefit from a firmer surface.

Puffy Cloud vs Leesa Original: Temperature Regulation

  • The Puffy Cloud has a cool-touch cover and a layer of gel foam
  • The Leesa Original has a twill fabric cover and top cooling layer
  • Both mattresses do a good job of keeping sleepers cool

Considering both the Puffy and the Leesa are all-foam mattresses, we were impressed by how cool both of them kept our testers overnight. The Puffy has a cool to the touch cover and a layer of gel foam to keep sleepers’ temperature regulated. The only slight complaint we had was how slippery the cover was.

The Leesa has a top layer of cooling foam which helps to keep cool and comfortable. However, neither of these are specialist cooling mattresses and, if you sleep particularly hot, we would recommend investing in one of the best cooling mattresses instead.

Puffy Cloud vs Leesa Original: Which should you buy?

Buy the Puffy Cloud if…

You suffer with aches and pains: The Puffy Cloud did a particularly good job at alleviating aches and pains for back sleepers.

You sleep warm but want an all-foam mattress: Although it won’t be cooling enough for really hot sleepers, the vast majority will find that the Puffy keeps them cool and comfortable throughout the night.

You’re a side sleeper who enjoys a firmer feel: The medium firm feel of the Puffy Cloud means that, whilst there’s plenty of contouring, side sleepers who prefer a firmer feel will find it most comfortable.

Buy the Leesa Original if…

You want a more traditional all-foam feel: The Leesa has more cushioning than the Puffy and will allow sleepers to sink in a little further.

You share your bed with a restless partner: Both mattresses are good at motion isolation, but the Leesa has a little more cushioning to absorb any movement.

You want a mattress with good eco credentials: The Leesa is Greenguard certified and designed and assembled in the US.
