Puerto Rico's newspaper industry is about to undergo a historic change. GFR Media announced Monday that El Nuevo Día and Primera Hora, two of the island's most prominent newspapers, will stop publishing print editions and become exclusively digital beginning Sept. 28, another milestone in the rapid transformation of Spanish-language journalism in Puerto Rico and the continental United States.
The final print edition of Primera Hora will be published Thursday, Sept. 24, while El Nuevo Día will put out its last newspaper on Sunday, Sept. 27. Both are being prepared as commemorative editions honoring their histories and the generations of employees involved in producing and distributing the newspapers.
