Many moons ago, as I was walking down the access stairs to my maisonette above the shops, a man was walking up. As the staircase had become a public urinal (The war against wild toileting: is there any way to stop people weeing – and worse – in the street?, 5 April), I turned the corner, then turned back and shouted at him mid-urination. He got such a fright – and hurried back down. Serves him right that there was now a large stain down the inside leg of his light brown trousers.

• The article on lack of public toilets reminded me of Tony Benn, who said that when he was caught short while driving, he stopped, opened the bonnet and watered the engine, as this was the most unobtrusive way to not be embarrassed in public.
