People have been urged to make their voices heard over two projects that could create thousands of jobs and homes. Residents in Rushcliffe and Broxtowe are being asked to help inform the design of future communities in their areas, as part of a government pilot scheme.
Focused on design quality at future development sites at Toton and Chetwynd Barracks and the Ratcliffe-on-Soar Power Station area, the design consultation will seek views on more connected, sustainable, and beautiful places for people to live and work. Ratcliffe-on-Soar Power Station, which is scheduled for closure in 2024, is set to become a new industrial and business area, including a 'gigafactory' and hotel, while the planned closure of Chetwynd Barracks in 2026, is hoped to allow the construction of 4,500 homes.
Ben Bradley MP, Leader of Nottinghamshire County Council, said: “Proposals for Toton and Chetwynd and Ratcliffe-on-Soar are an important part of our long-term vision for the future of the county. New developments here could bring in thousands of new jobs, add billions to the regional economy and provide much-needed new homes.

“We want to know what local people think about what these new communities should look like. If you live or work in these areas, please make sure that your voice is heard.
“We have a major opportunity to shape these developments so that they are environmentally friendly, high quality, well connected, attractive places that people want to visit or call their home, with suitable green spaces and facilities nearby.”
East Midlands Development Company, supported by a partnership of local authorities including Broxtowe Borough Council, Rushcliffe Borough Council and Nottinghamshire County Council, is consulting on the design code, one of 25 pathfinders across the country for the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities. Events in Clifton and Chilwell and an online consultation will ask people to help create "beautiful, better-connected places" for those working and living in south Nottinghamshire.
Cllr Simon Robinson, Leader of Rushcliffe Borough Council, said: “Residents are urged to take part in the consultations and have their say on the future of this key development at Ratcliffe-on-Soar.
“This is a hugely important strategic and iconic site that could shape this part of Rushcliffe and the East Midlands and attract significant investment in the region for decades to come.”
People can take part in the consultation by visiting www.emdesigncode.co.uk. Public exhibitions will be held on Friday, March 17 at Clifton Village Hall between 4pm and 7pm, and on Saturday, March 18 at Village Hotel Nottingham between 11am and 2pm.
