Public concern for safety at McKinstry Road junction as crashes continue

Concerns are continuing to be raised in regards to a busy road in the Dunmurry area.

Residents in the area say they have been calling for something to be done to make The Cutts junction on the McKinstry Road safer. And while there has been a "solution found" by the Department for Infrastructure, more time that passes, more accidents are being witnessed.

Local drivers have admitted avoiding the area out of fear, and instead, driving through Dunmurry instead of attempting the junction.

Sinn Féin MLA Danny Baker said the spot has been "dangerous for many years".

"This afternoon the Cutts junction witnessed another road traffic accident," he posted at the weekend.

"This has been a very dangerous spot for many years and while progress has been made with the design work being completed, the upgrade will cost upwards of 1.8 million. With no executive there is no three year budget agreement and no minister in place to take decisions.

"I firmly believe this upgrade would be top priority for any minister and with the plans ready it would only need signed off. We will continue to lobby the Department for infrastructure & apply all the pressure will possibly can."

On December 28, the road was closed for several hours after a serious accident at The Cutts junction on the McKinstry Road.

The collision was reported at around 9.30am on the McKinstry Road, which was then closed. The NI Ambulance Service sent three crews and a Hazardous Area Response Team (HART to the scene).

Following assessment and treatment on-site, one person was taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital for treatment.

A number of days later, another crash occurred in the same area.

Alliance MLA Sorcha Eastwood wrote: "Can't believe I'm writing this but yet another RTA at the Cutts. That will be 5 in 10 days.

"I know a single filter light is not the long term solution and the long term plans are good- but this situation isn't tenable. A temp filter is needed."

A Department for Infrastructure spokesperson told Belfast Live: "The Department is aware of the public concern about right turn facilities at the intersection of McKinstry Road and The Cutts. The solution found to address this issue involves full control of right turn movements within the signal phases.

"The detailed design of such was completed last year and acquisition of land is progressing. Officials are also working on preparing the contract documents for the construction works. Subject to the availability of resources, this will allow the Department to advance the scheme upon satisfactory completion of the land acquisition process."
