Pub garden smoking under threat following results of major survey

  • A new YouGov survey, commissioned by Action on Smoking and Health (Ash), indicates that almost two-thirds (62 per cent) of people in Britain would support a ban on smoking in pub gardens.
  • The poll also found widespread public backing for extending smoke-free laws to children’s play areas (93 per cent), bus stops (78 per cent), and university campuses (68 per cent).
  • These findings follow the UK's recent legislative milestone with the Tobacco and Vapes Bill receiving royal assent, making it the first European country to prevent anyone aged 17 or younger from ever legally purchasing cigarettes.
  • Ash described these proposed extensions to smoke-free laws as 'common sense' steps vital for creating a 'smoke-free generation' and called for a plan to reduce smoking in homes.
  • The Department of Health and Social Care confirmed it is carefully reviewing responses to a recent consultation on making various outdoor settings, including playgrounds and areas outside hospitals, smoke, vape, and heated tobacco-free.
