There is usually one teacher whose class students simply do not want to miss. Even students who regularly skip other lectures may suddenly arrive early, sit through the entire lesson and pay closer attention when their favorite teacher is teaching. Psychology suggests that this behavior may have less to do with the subject itself and more to do with motivation, emotional connection, perceived competence and the quality of the teacher-student relationship.
Having a favorite teacher is not unusual. Students can respond differently to different teachers because classroom experiences are shaped not only by academic content but also by how supported, understood and competent students feel. Research has repeatedly linked positive teacher-student relationships with stronger engagement and, in some studies, better academic outcomes.
