Psychology says siblings who tease each other aren't always fighting, they may be building lifelong skills

Anyone with a brother or sister has probably experienced it. One sibling steals the TV remote, gives someone a silly nickname, or brings up an embarrassing childhood story at the dinner table. While these moments can be annoying, they are also incredibly common.

Psychology says sibling teasing is often a normal part of growing up. That doesn't mean every joke is harmless or that hurtful behavior should be ignored. Instead, researchers explain that light-hearted, mutual teasing can help children learn social rules, emotional regulation, and conflict resolution. When teasing becomes constant, cruel, or one-sided, however, it can have negative effects on mental health and family relationships.
