Psychology says people who still use old-school alarm clocks and table calendars may be avoiding more than technology

While smartphones can wake us up, remind us about appointments and display an entire month's schedule within seconds, some people still prefer something much simpler: an old-fashioned alarm clock beside the bed and a physical calendar sitting on the table. They may deliberately avoid using their phone as an alarm, write appointments on paper and turn a calendar page every month.

Psychology suggests that this preference is not necessarily about being “behind the times.” It can reflect habit formation, cognitive offloading, environmental cues, perceived control and nostalgia. For some people, tangible objects simply make everyday routines feel more visible and manageable.
