Psychology says people who keep chewing gum when they're bored may be satisfying more than just a craving

You're waiting at the airport, sitting through a long meeting, watching a slow movie, or studying for an exam. Without thinking much about it, you unwrap a piece of chewing gum. A few minutes later, you realize you've been chewing the entire time.

For many people, chewing gum has little to do with hunger. Psychology says it can actually be a response to boredom, mental fatigue, or the brain's need for stimulation. Researchers have found that repetitive behaviors like chewing can help people stay alert, regulate emotions, and occupy the mind during moments when there isn't much happening.
