Psychology says people who hesitate to ask for money they lent may be protecting relationships more than their wallets

Most people have been there. A friend borrows money and promises to return it in a few days. Weeks turn into months, but instead of reminding them, you stay silent. You rehearse the conversation in your head, type out a message, delete it, and convince yourself to "wait a little longer."

Psychology says this hesitation is surprisingly common. While it may seem irrational to avoid asking for your own money, researchers suggest the behavior often comes from emotional concerns rather than financial ones. People may fear damaging a relationship, appearing selfish, creating conflict, or being judged negatively.
